Java Software Engineer III
Reporting to the Seattle-based Senior Director of Engineering, ESPN Digital Media, the Software Engineer III plays a key role in the development of ESPN.com digital products, including the development of data handling applications, data manipulation tools and support of the editorial team. He/she has a successful track record of developing interactive tools, utilities, and products from conceptualization through deployment. The Software Engineer III is a team player with an entrepreneurial spirit and is comfortable operating in a fast paced environment.
This role has an emphasis on supporting other Seattle-based ESPN developers by helping drive consistent best practices regarding the use of development tools and technologies. Ideal candidates will possess a passion for improving developer productivity.

Responsibilities
Developer Productivity Help drive adoption of development tools and best practices. Administer, support and troubleshoot shared build services like Perforce, TeamCity, Sonatype Nexus, and Sonar. Incept, review and troubleshoot Maven project object model (POM) files for new and existing projects. Develop tools to automate developer tasks. Possible tools include Maven and Nexus plugins in Java, and/or improving internal operational tools written in Python/Django Drive the deployment and adoption of a service and project dashboard across all of ESPN.com. Software Engineer III Design, develop, test, and implement new java based applications. Provide maintenance support and assist with updates to existing web technologies Interface with external vendors to coordinate integration of technologies Provide guidance and training to more Junior engineers Uses resourcefulness and innovative thinking in applying well established analytical techniques and basic organization skills to evaluating semi-routine alternatives and to developing recommended approaches to assigned problems Accountable for high levels of personal productivity on assigned tasks and projects Communicates clearly technical findings, issues, and outcomes to other team members Communicates with both internal and external contacts at a variety of organizational levels to gather requirements and discuss defined specifications
Basic Qualifications
Minimum 5 years related work experience Experience with development tools and platforms such as Maven, Eclipse, Git, Perforce, Jira, TeamCity, and EC2. Patience and a friendly “how can I help attitude?” when working to onboard developers to new technologies. Strong experience with Java, servlets and web applications. Strong knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server, including stored procedures, index strategies, and transactions. Understanding of multi-tier web architectures, and OO design patterns and concepts. A strong understanding of the Transact-SQL (T-SQL) language. Demonstrated ability to work on a diverse scope of software and database projects requiring detailed analysis, creative/practical problem solving, and sound judgment. Ability to operate effectively in a team-oriented and collaborative environment. Must demonstrate solid organization/communication skills. Manage multiple projects within a short development cycle. Projects are larger in scope and fairly complex. A passion for sports!
Preferred Qualifications
Experience/knowledge of the following is a plus: Glassfish, Tomcat, JMS/MQ messaging, JPA/Hibernate, JAXB/JAX-RS, EJB's and other Java technologies.
Preferred Education
Masters Degree in Computer Science or related field.
Required Education
Degree in Computer Science or related field, and/or equivalent work experience.
